Spa Finder Magazine Announces Readers’ Choice Awards, Most In-Depth Consumer Rating of Spas and Spa Offerings

NEW YORK, NY (September 04, 2002) − Spa Finder Magazine, the top selling spa travel and lifestyle publication, announces its first-ever Readers’ Choice Awards, revealing readers’ favorite destination and resort spas in 20 categories–from Best Meditation Programs to Best Value for Your Money. The Awards, which are featured in the September/October issue (now available on newsstands), represent the most in-depth consumer assessment of the spa market to date.

"We dug quite a bit deeper than ’general interest’ travel magazine spa polls," said Editor-in-Chief Malcolm Abrams. "All the standard categories are covered, but our readers also weigh in on unique spa offerings like meditation, yoga, hiking, massage, skin care, creative workshops and healing therapies. These are the first awards to reflect the diversity of today’s spa experience."

The Awards are organized into four general areas–Treatments and Programs; Body, Mind, Spirit; Activities; and Comforts–and cover a range of very focused spa offerings like Best Hiking, Best Spa Cuisine, etc. Many categories are further broken down, enabling readers to discover, for example, not only the best spas for yoga, but also which schools of yoga (Iyengar, Hatha, Kripalu) are taught at each spa, the number of weekly classes offered, and whether workshops and/or one-on-one classes are available.

"With so many different spa activities, programs, amenities and treatments available, individual spa travelers can have vastly different expectations and goals," adds Pete Ellis, Spa Finder, Inc. chairman and CEO. "Some are looking for a traditional luxury experience, while others might want a desert rock climbing adventure; some seek balance through meditation, and still others just want to hit the links for some great golf. Our Readers’ Choice Awards serve as an essential overview of the top spas for these specific spa experiences, provided by the best critics of all–our readers."

Over 2,500 Spa Finder Magazine readers and visitors to cast ballots for more than 500 spa properties. Spa Finder does not reveal rankings–who finished first, second, third, and so on–because of the disparity in size among spas. Abrams notes that some properties have fewer than 40 rooms, while others have hundreds. "Our thinking was that if small spas could make it into the top ten, they deserved to be ranked as equals with their larger cousins."

Spa Finder will announce the Readers’ Choice picks for the top international spas by region and the top overall spas in their size class at a special awards dinner to be held at this October’s International Spa Association (ISPA) conference.
